Preparation Tips for Group Discussion [GD].

Group Discussion panel is testing whether you know the topic well, are able to present your point of view in a logical manner, are interested in understanding what others feel about the same subject and are able to conduct yourself with grace in a group situation.
So here are some of the main, Do's & Dont's of a Group Discussion process for making the best impression in the panel
  • Do's:
1. Listen to the subject carefully, with great intrest2. Put down your thoughts on a paper
3. Initiate the discussion if you know the subject well
4. Listen to others if you don’t know the subject, listening to opponents also matter most. It shows your ability to accommodate others opinion too.
5. Support you point with some facts and figures with best examples if possible
6. Make short contribution of 30-45 seconds 3-4 times (Express your opinion within a total time of 2-3 minutes)
7. Give others a chance to speak, & listen to closly to what they say.
8. Speak politely and pleasantly with confidence, Respect contribution from other members.
9. Disagree politely and agree with what is right.
10. Summarize the discussion if the group has not reached a conclusion.
11. Make a points and focus on explaining it in the best possible way, but have clear knowledge of the topic you speak.
12. Speak fluently and convey the information in the simplest way possible.
  • Dont's:
While a lot of people have already expressed their ideas on what to do in a GD, I would like to mention a few absolute Dont’s in a Group Discussion:

1. Speaking even if you do not have sufficient knowledge or Half knowledge about the given topic.
2. Over speak, intervene and snatch other’s chance to speak.
3. Argue and shout during the GD
4. Never Cross your Legs, during the panel
5. Look at the evaluators or a particular group member
6. Talking irrelevant things and distract the discussion
7. Pose negative body gestures like shaping your hairs, leaning back on the chair, knocking the table with a pen, fingering your nose, etc.
8. Mention erratic statistics.
9. Display low self confidence with shaky voice and trembling hands.
10. Trying to dominate the discussion.
11. Put others in an embarrassing situation by asking them to speak if they don’t want.
12. Do not abuse, or be offensive to other members in the panel.
